Lieve Cornil has been a freelance lettering artist with a deep passion for teaching since 1996. Although she discovered calligraphy in 1988, it was only after completing her MBA at the University of Ghent that she began to take her lettering practice seriously. She trained at the Scriptorium de Toulouse (France), specializing in formal calligraphy, letter drawing, and graphic design.
Lieve Cornil later continued her education in California with Thomas Ingmire (USA) and Arne Wolf (USA), where she focused more on expressive calligraphy. She completed her training with a short part-time stay at the University of Reading’s Department of Typography and Graphic Communication.
Her work as a designer and teacher took her to several countries. She began freelancing in London, working for branding and advertising agencies while also teaching occasionally at the Surrey Institute for Art and Design. She then moved to France, where she taught typography at ECV (École de Communication Visuelle) and became its director a year later.
In 2006 she returned to Belgium. This international experience helped shape the long-term educational lettering programme she set up in 2009. The programme combines education with creative entrepreneurship and offers a valuable opportunity to pass on lettering skills to a new generation of professionals.
