The short course InDesign for Book Layout is ideal for beginner graphic designers who want to focus on book design or large-scale publications. Graphic designers with experience who wish to refine their workflow will also find valuable insights here. A lack of technical knowledge should never limit your creativity.

In this course, you will learn, among other things:
– how to set up your computer and InDesign for proper typography and book layout
– how to use color profiles for print production
– how to import and prepare large texts for layout
– how to work with styles (character, paragraph, object, and nested styles)
– basic principles of book design and typography
– how to build a solid baseline grid and layout structure
– the components of a book and how to design them (front matter, table of contents, footnotes, back matter including bibliography and index, etc.)

The sessions will also include hands-on exercises.

Practical Information

This course is not included in the one-year program Typography & Book, but it complements it very well. The sessions are repeated annually.

Bring your own laptop with InDesign CC installed. Only a basic knowledge of InDesign is required.

All course materials, including a comprehensive syllabus (PDF), will be provided before the start of the lessons.

Costs

Registration fee: €280. For students enrolled in the one-year program: €140.
Tiered discounts apply if you combine multiple course modules within the same year.
