No fewer than 31 students from the Expert Class Type Design and the Saturday program Typography & Book Design will present their graduation works to the public in the four exhibition rooms of the Museum Plantin-Moretus. We’ve never had an exhibition of this scale before. You’ll be amazed by the wide variety of these works.

Typography & Book Design

Fourteen students who followed the Typography & Book Design Program over the past year are presenting their original book concepts here.
For these graduation projects, the students were free to choose their own subject or theme. However, they were required to seek out interesting collaborations with someone from a different background (graphic designers, artists, curators, editors, art institutions, etc.).

Together with this external partner, they explored which form of publishing would be the most suitable, relevant, or challenging for their topic. These final projects offered the students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired over the past year.

A number of these concepts were or are actually being printed. For many, it was the first time they took on the role of self-publisher.

Students: Monique Baan, Xander Feys, Astrid Goossens, Sophie Granger, Jurgen Konings, Nell Marckx, Emmanuel Peeters, Daniëlle Raymaekers, Emmy van Eijk, Kris Van Elshocht, Raf Van Rooy, Ruth Van Wichelen, Mathieu Vancamp, Antoinette van Spaandonk

Results Type Design

Our type designers are presenting 17 new typefaces, created based on typographic heritage and historical prints preserved in the museum. Punchcutters from the Renaissance, Baroque, and Modern periods were closely studied.

These students come from all over Europe, North and South America, and even India. The Expert Class Type Design has been taught since 2010 by Dr. Frank Blokland, a renowned Dutch type designer, software developer, and lecturer. This is his final year with us. Starting next year, the course will be taught by Jeremy Tankard.

In the exhibition the students’ research is illustrated with photographs, accompanied by the original source materials displayed in show cases.

Students: Gilad Bar, Catarina Barbosa, Sebastian Boroș, Jim Catel, Pratyush Das, Jörg Drees, Maria Fontenelle, Katie Fridman, Lucas Gini, Yusuke Ito, Toni Melián Hernández, Elena Novoselova, Daniel Sabino, Sasha Smirnov, Sarah Tilley, Tomislava Vankova, Cato Verschuur
