P
hysical books, e-books, audiobooks—they continue to endure, but in a complex world where readers’ media consumption is constantly evolving. Competition is fierce, margins are tight, and phenomena like streaming, ChatGPT, and the increasing prevalence of English continuously reshape the rules of the game. The Publishing course provides insight into the challenging landscape in which a publisher of (digital) books must operate today—and in the future.
You will gain practical knowledge and experience in selecting an idea, topic, or author; editing a manuscript; packaging it into various appealing formats; marketing it through promotion and distribution; and finally achieving results: enthusiastic readers, satisfied booksellers, and a profitable publishing house.
As a homework assignment, you will create a publishing proposal for a (fictional) book, including a well-founded estimation of costs and revenues and a solid marketing plan.
After completing this course, you will understand how a publishing house operates. You will know where the opportunities lie and where the challenges are. Additionally, you will have a solid foundation to publish a book, whether independently or through a publisher, if desired.
This class is part of the one-year Typography & Book course, but it can also be taken separately.
Registration fee: €380.
Tiered discounts apply if you combine multiple course modules in the same year.
